A small late 17th century Delft blue and white octagonal pottery vase, decorated in the Chinese Transitional style of porcelain from the mid 17th century, the bulbous body with figures and animals in a rural setting with trees and pavilions in the distance, between bands of stiff-leaf decoration, now mounted as a lamp finished with an octagonal carved and water gilt base.

From the third quarter of the 17th century, the potters of Delft in the Netherlands produced an alternative to expensive Chinese porcelain introduced in the early 17th century, faithfully copying both the shapes and decoration of Chinese stylistic periods in faience, typically choosing the most characteristic decorative motifs of the exotic Orient.
