England, c. 1770

A George III mahogany bureau bookcase of fine proportion and richly carved, having a moulded cornice with a foliate and dental carved frieze, above a pair of astragal glazed doors with three adjustable shelves, the bureau fitted with pigeon holes, small drawers and secret document holders behind two pilasters, flanking a mirrored door that reveals a removable structure with secret compartments, above four graduated drawers flanked by inset carved columns, standing on ogee bracket feet with carved gadrooned decoration. With a depository label, ‘R.P. OVER & SON’S Ltd/ Depository/ CAMBERLEY SURREY’ and with a further label inscribed ‘given to J.M. Villiers Stuart/1958/Kept at Old Acres/til required/ E.h.Villiers Stuart’
